FAMILY WELLNESS: A Foundation for Strong Immunity
Immunity is the body’s defense system, protecting it from harmful germs, parasites, and bacteria. To do this, the immune system needs to differentiate between healthy cells and the interlopers. This intricate system is a very complicated set of processes that science has only recently begun to understand. Your defenses include your skin, mucus membranes, digestive-tract bacteria, lymph nodes, and special cells including antibodies, lymphocytes, and phagocytes. Lymphocytes help the body recognize and destroy the invading agents of disease. Phagocytes primarily obliterate pathogens.59
Since the immune system has so many parts, it is hard for “boost the immune system” to be truly meaningful. The foundation of a robust immunity is a healthy lifestyle. The good news is that if you’ve put into place even a few of the tips in this book so far, you are already creating a foundation for strong immunity. Let’s review some of these tips, and connect them with your vital energy.60
• Eat a well-balanced diet. Malnutrition, sadly, has been shown to prevent a strong immune response. If you are eating a varied, whole-grain- and plant-based diet, you are already getting an important range of micronutrients and vitamins. Nutrients such as zinc, selenium, and vitamins A, C, E, and D have all been shown to play a role in immune response, so by choosing “rainbow eating” you are providing the building blocks your body needs.
• Break up with processed sugar. Sugar has been shown to suppress the immune response. Eating less of it, especially when your body is already working hard to fight an illness, removes a harmful roadblock to your health.
• Practice balanced hygiene. Oversanitizing prevents developing immune systems from becoming robust. But balance day-to-day exposure with thoughtful hygiene practices; handwashing and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing can prevent the spread of undesirable germs.
• Stay hydrated. Water flushes out toxins, helps produce lymph, supports digestion, and oxygenates the blood. These are all intrinsic parts of a well-functioning immune system.
• Keep that body moving. Rhythm and movement keep the lymph system flushing toxins through the body; they help the heart and lungs do their jobs, and reduce stress.
• When in doubt, laugh. Laughter helps reduce the stress hormone cortisol, and measurably increases antibodies.
